Putting our people first: What it's like to work at BioStrata

Prioritising employees in the workplace is essential. When employees feel valued and respected, they’re more likely to be engaged, motivated, productive, and, ultimately, committed to the organisation and its purpose. We truly believe this, which is why at BioStrata, our team is at our core. Our people come first, and looking after them is our number one priority.

That’s why our company values and culture are built around making BioStrata a great place to work. With a team of like-minded individuals who share the same core values, together, we create an environment that empowers everyone to reach their full potential, do amazing work together, and enjoy themselves while doing it.

A core part of ensuring a positive working environment is to create a feedback loop, so you can hear what’s working well and what can be optimised, directly from the team. We use several mechanisms, from surveys to face-to-face group and one-on-one sessions. In this blog, we share what it’s like to work at BioStrata by summarising key aspects our team spoke about when we sat down to discuss their experiences with them.

We’ve grouped responses into three core areas:

  1. A career that helps make the world a better place
  2. An inclusive culture with positive values at its core
  3. Leaders who aren’t afraid to challenge the agency “norm”

If one of the above core areas interests you most, you can skip ahead to that section of the blog using the links above. You can also skip ahead to watch the video we put together of some of the team talking about what it’s like to work at BioStrata.

A career that helps make the world a better place

Today’s world faces various challenges, such as climate change, pandemics, and environmental degradation. Many people want to contribute to creating solutions to these issues. One way to do this is to work in the life sciences, but for some people, working in the lab just isn’t for them. However, there are still opportunities to make a difference — not all life science jobs are lab-based. Administrative, regulatory, sales, and marketing roles are just a few examples of alternative life science career paths.

One of the things that excites all of us at BioStrata is how life science marketing plays a crucial role in bringing beneficial new products and treatments to market, and ensuring they reach the scientists and life science professionals who need them to advance their research.

Our ultimate mission is to use our marketing and communications skills to help connect scientists and healthcare professionals with the tools and technologies they need to make the world a better place. In fact, by 2030, we aim to help life science companies bring 100 game-changing products to market and transform the world through the power of science.

But don’t just take our word for it. We sat down with some of the team recently to hear directly from them what it’s like to have a career at BioStrata. Here’s a snippet of what one of our Senior Account Managers JP had to say…

"You're not just doing it because it's a job, you're doing it because it's your passion. That passion really is there and it's infectious. You cannot get through a company meeting without laughing your head off one moment and feeling really proud the next. It’s amazing, it's the best place I’ve worked.

It makes you not want to get out of bed in the morning; it makes you want to leap out of bed." – Jean-Pierre (JP) Joubert, Senior Account Manager

An inclusive culture with positive values at its core

It’s well-known that a friendly working environment promotes a positive and inclusive culture. When people feel that they are valued and respected, they are more likely to be motivated to be productive and do their best work.

Similarly, a truly supportive working environment fosters creativity and innovation. When people feel comfortable sharing their ideas, they’re more likely to suggest new and creative solutions to problems. This not only improves the quality of work but also helps to encourage and maintain teamwork, as people feel comfortable and safe working with each other.

This is exactly the type of company culture we work to maintain at BioStrata, where our people come first. What makes our culture unique is that we all truly live and breathe the same core values, day-in and day-out. These aren’t just words written on a wall, they’re the magnets that attract like-minded people to work with us as clients and teammates.

Here’s what some of the team have to say about the team culture at BioStrata…

"It doesn't feel like there's a hierarchy, if you need to ask a question you can go to anyone in the company and ask them that question. It's amazing. It's hard work but you're with such a nice group of people and working for such a lovely company that it doesn't feel like hard work." – April Taylor, Account Manager

"Working at BioStrata is quite unique actually. It’s very much a family culture, everyone cares about each other." – Jean-Pierre (JP) Joubert, Senior Account Manager

"It almost feels cheesy to say how amazing a company is and how nice the people that you work with are, but how else can you say something that you so genuinely believe without coming across cheesy?!" – Lauren Barham, Senior Marketing Manager

Leaders who aren’t afraid to challenge the agency “norm”

There are many unique benefits to a career in a life science marketing agency, including opportunities to work on an exciting, diverse range of projects every day — indeed no two days are the same. To meet multiple deadlines and deliver on the unique requirements of each project, great teamwork is essential. This is particularly true if taking on a new project type or working to a faster turnaround time.

Given the variety of projects you get to work on in an agency, it’s a great environment to quickly learn, develop and progress. However, this can come with its challenges. Typically, agencies are known for being pressurised and too fast-paced, with some likening it to never being able to catch your breath. At BioStrata, we are determined to challenge and break this “norm” by creating a dependable, supportive and productive team dynamic. By doing so, we maintain the benefits of working in an agency while providing a much more positive experience.

To ensure the people are always at the heart of the business, BioStrata’s leadership team created an agency operating system (read more in our “3 Ps” business model blog) designed to produce a supportive, safe working environment for our team built upon trust, flexibility and support.

Here’s what one of our Senior Account Directors Jo had to say about what she feels makes BioStrata unique compared to other agencies…

"When Paul and Clare set up the agency in 2014, they wanted the agency to be different and you can see that everything that they do is focused on the people within the organisation and making sure that they're okay and that they're looked after.

I’ve worked at other agencies previously and at BioStrata it really is that team culture that makes it different and stand out from other agencies that I’ve been at. There's no real sort of competition or ego amongst anybody within the team.

I think the difference of BioStrata is that care that the leaders have for the whole team. You know that they're obviously focused on running a successful business that delivers a top-level service to clients, but they also really do care about each and every one of us within the team, and it's been proven time and time again since I’ve been here."

- Jo Butler, Senior Account Director
